Denver deserves leadership willing to confront crime head on.
Make our city safer by adding 400 more police officers to the Denver Police Department.
Improve policing with more training and better funding for law enforcement.
Stand against personal recognizance bonds that put violent criminals back on the streets.
Fix long 911 response times to make sure our residents get the immediate help they deserve.
The Problem:
Crime in Denver is getting worse. Denver’s murders have nearly tripled over the last ten years. Yes, crime has increased nationwide, but Denver is performing worse than other cities. We have the 2nd highest number of car thefts, the 4th highest number of property crimes, and the 8th highest number of rapes. These numbers are unacceptable to the citizens of Denver. They should be unacceptable to our leaders.
Prosecutions are down. A city that’s taking its crime problem seriously would see prosecutions increase when crime increases. But prosecutions of felony crimes in Denver have dropped 25% despite crime going up. Prosecutions are down across almost every category.
The Solution: Denver deserves leadership willing to confront crime head on.
Preventing crime starts with putting more officers on our streets. Public Safety starts with a commitment to law enforcement—the men and women who keep us safe. Denver is less safe than many other cities because we have fewer police officers than they do. The average American city with a population over 250,000, has 26 officers for every 10,000 residents. We have 21. I am committed to adding 400 officers to the Denver Police Department.
We need better officer training. I will prioritize funding for programs that increase training time in the community. Community-oriented policing has been shown to increase trust between residents and police.
We need leadership that consistently prosecutes criminals. As mayor, I’ll be a consistent voice against personal recognizance bonds that put criminals back on the streets while they are waiting for trial. I’ll make sure we have the resources to aggressively pursue and prosecute illegal gun possession.
We need a public safety system that quickly responds to cries for help. Denver deserves better than a 911 system that takes more than 20 seconds to answer 1/3 of incoming calls. I will work to lower 911 response times to make sure our residents get the immediate help they deserve.
